Do you enjoy spending time in nature and are planning to visit Pelješac? Excellent! This unique place, in addition to its enchanting landscapes, also offers the opportunity to pick wild plants – a natural wealth uncontaminated by pesticides. Plants from Pelješac are used to prepare teas, essential oils, salads, various dishes and much more.

Late winter and early spring bring an abundance of wild plants, while the Mediterranean climate makes Pelješac a true oasis for those who love nature and a healthy lifestyle. Let’s set off together to discover this green treasure!

The queen of wild herbs – asparagus

Asparagus holds a special place among wild plants. Known for its nutritional value, low calorie content and rich vitamin content, asparagus is an excellent ally in detoxifying the body. It contains plenty of antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

On Pelješac, asparagus is an indispensable addition to traditional cuisine – it is most often prepared in a frittata or a salad. If you visit the peninsula between February and April, you are sure to encounter many asparagus foragers. Asparagus picking is also a kind of competition – who can find more! Knowledge and experience are needed to locate it among the bushes and rocks.

Plants with a taste of the sea

Crithmum, motar or petrovac in Croatian, is often referred to as a plant that feeds on sea foam. Its fleshy leaves are full of vitamin C and are perfect for detoxifying the body. It is tastiest in spring, and is often prepared as a pickled side dish or an addition to salads.

Herbs, salads and side dishes

Wild marjoram and oregano are frequent guests of the Mediterranean wilderness. These herbs are an indispensable part of tomato sauces, pizzas and numerous other dishes. Fresh or dried, their aromas and flavours enrich any dish.

Create a true Mediterranean feast using herbs such as meadow salsify, wild carrot and common sowthistle. Meadow salsify is great for salads, soups and stews, while wild carrot can be eaten raw, cooked or as an herb. Common sowthistle is perfect as a cooked side dish, often combined with common dandelion or other plants.

There is also fennel, known for its medicinal properties, and bay leaves, both of which you can pick year round.

Medicinal plants and floral splendour

Pelješac is a true paradise for tea lovers: mallow, yarrow, thyme and sage are just some of the choices. In spring, the peninsula turns into a gallery of flowers, full of orchids and other wild flowers, which are ideal for enjoying, but not for picking.

Enjoy and explore with caution

Being in nature brings peace and joy, while collecting wild plants allows you to take home a piece of Mediterranean magic. However, if you are not sure which one it is, always consult an expert.

In addition to their health and gastronomic value, the wild plants of Pelješac are a symbol of tradition, natural beauty and the connection between man and the environment. It’s up to you to discover this plant kingdom!
