Night of old Orebic
The League Against Cancer Korčula – Pelješac – Lastovo – Mljet invites you on the 24th of July 2022 to the Night of Old Orebić with the support of the Municipality of Orebić and the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Orebić.
Experience Orebić in ancient times! Old customs and crafts will be visible along the promenade residents will be dressed in captain’s uniforms and polonaises. Old photographs of famous Orebić captains will be exhibited on the promenade, and visitors will be able to taste padišpanje, hroštule, prikle, mussels and other delicacies.
Orebić was founded at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th centuries, in the area of the then Republic of Dubrovnik, and from the very beginning it turned to the sea as a source of profit.
From the 17th century, Pelješac ships formed an important part of the Dubrovnik merchant navy. Shipowners’ families became more and more powerful and began to invest in joint sailing ships. Their rise continued under Austrian rule, especially in the second half of the 19th century, when, in 1865, a joint stock company was established in Orebić for the “construction (and exploitation) of long-distance ships”, later the Pelješac Maritime Company, and in 1875 equipment for the social shipyard in Orebić was acquired. The shipyard was ceremoniously opened by Emperor Franz Joseph. It was mainly used for repairing ships, and during its working life (13 years), it also built 3 long sailing sailboats.
All proceeds raised during the event go to charity.
