Sailing Through Tradition – Festival of Pelješac Captains

The Festival of Pelješac Captains returns for its fifth edition, taking place from May 18th to 30th, bringing a rich programme dedicated to the glorious maritime history of Pelješac.
More than 2,000 sailors, 250 captains and as many as 90 sailing ships marked the golden era of Pelješac. The maritime tradition of this region spans over 350 years, reaching its peak in the 19th century, before the arrival of steamships. Orebić, Kućište and Viganj were important centres of maritime power in the Mediterranean at the time. It was in Orebić that the Pelješac Maritime Society was founded in 1865, followed ten years later by the establishment of a shipyard, further strengthening the area’s maritime importance.
The stories of captains who sailed the world’s seas still live on today, from brave encounters with pirates and powerful storms to the pride and uncertainty of long journeys. The sea has always been a way of life for the people of Pelješac, and this maritime tradition continues to be passed down from generation to generation.
The Festival of Pelješac Captains invites you to experience the spirit of the past through a diverse programme. The opening takes place on May 18th at the Maritime Museum in Orebić with an exhibition by Poloneza. Throughout the festival, visitors can enjoy klapa evenings, a free guided tour through old Orebić, a folklore evening, children’s workshops and a theatre performance, while the grand finale will be the Sailors’ Night with great music and a performance by Klapa Šufit.
The festival is supported by the Maritime Museum, Folklore Group Poloneza, the League Against Cancer, Amateur Theatre Group Kušin, Klapa Nava, tour guide Lidia Starašinič, numerous enthusiasts and the Orebić Tourist Board.

May 18 –
Festival Opening: Museum Day and the exhibition “Between Storm and Ink – The Heritage of Seafarers”, along with the lecture “Bulk Cargo: On Restored Objects from the Maritime Museum Orebić” by Dr. Ivana Viđena.
The children’s group Poloneza and Klapa Nava will perform at the opening.
