In 2024, Orebić is celebrating an important anniversary, an astounding 120 years of tourism!

Throughout history, the most important economic branch in Pelješac was agriculture, primarily viticulture. In the 15th century, seafaring began to develop, which reached its peak in the 19th century, and a large number of inhabitants in this region are still employed on ocean-faring ships as sailors and captains. Today, the most important industries on Pelješac are viticulture and tourism.

The beginning of the development of tourism is seen in 1904, when the “Society for the Beautification and Improvement of Orebić” was founded, which at that time brought together the most prominent citizens of Orebić. Although tourist arrivals had been recorded prior to this, this year is considered extremely important given that the society had an incredibly advanced or visionary purpose for its time, namely the control of the traffic of foreigners and the improvement of agriculture, in order to respond to the ever-increasing demands of tourism.

Pelješac has long been recognized as a place with exceptional natural beauty, particularly suitable for vacationing and tourism. In the 20th century, tourism in the region experienced its ups and downs. Constant growth was only stopped by wars: the first and second world wars, and then the homeland war in the 90s. In the last century, the greatest number of hotels were built here, while 1988 saw the peak of tourist arrivals and overnight stays. At that time, 61,817 tourists and 626,168 overnight stays were recorded on the Pelješac Riviera alone (from Viganj to Orebić).

Today, tourism is developing and, along with wine making, it is one of the most important branches of the economy. The Tourist Board of the Municipality of Orebić is a sort of successor to the tourist associations that had been active since the beginning of the 20th century, and was founded in 1994. Its main goals are providing information, and the promotion and development of tourism.

Today, the municipality of Orebić is second in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County in terms of the number of tourist arrivals and overnight stays, just behind Dubrovnik. It has a capacity of 11,500 commercial beds and in recent years has regularly had over 120,000 registered arrivals and almost 1,000,000 registered overnight stays.

The municipality of Orebić has a high number of arrivals and overnight stays, numerous high-quality tourism facilities, exceptional natural beauty, and is constantly working on improving tourist stays. This kind of success requires years of dedicated work, for which all stakeholders in tourism from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day are responsible.
