The Zagreb quartet

The Zagreb Quartet, the first permanent and professional ensemble of its kind in the Croatian music scene, was founded in 1919 and held its first concert on April 25th of that year. From the very beginning, the quartet developed diverse and rich programs covering a wide repertoire – from classical works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and other greats, to contemporary composers, with a special emphasis on Croatian music heritage. Today, the quartet consists of Davor Philips, Hrvoje Philips, Martin Jordan, and Martin Krpan.

Throughout its long and illustrious career, the Zagreb Quartet has received numerous awards and recognitions, among which the most significant national accolades include: the City of Zagreb Award in 1957, the Milko Trnina Award, the Vjesnik Award Josip Štolcer Slavenski, the Vladimir Nazor and Vatroslav Lisinski Awards, and the Charter of the Republic of Croatia for outstanding cultural contributions in 1999. The quartet is also a multiple recipient of prestigious music awards, including Porin, and in 2009, it was honored with the Vladimir Nazor Award for Lifetime Achievement.
